Melanie runs the interior design blog Wiener Wohnsinn. We talked about the art of welcoming in her inviting flat in Vienna.
How do you create a welcoming home?
With a few simple tips, you can easily create an inviting home in no time at all. It's best to start in the entrance area, as this ideally gives a first impression of the rest of the rooms. In general, I would say that you can create a new, cosy look very easily and very quickly with textiles such as curtains, rugs and cushions. Indirect lights positioned at different heights also create a cosy atmosphere.
What are your best tips for decorating an entrance area?
The entrance area is the first impression guests get of your home, so it's important to make it warm and inviting. A carpet, for example, helps to create an inviting atmosphere. A real game changer for me is a large mirror. Not only is it practical, but it also visually enlarges the room and reflects the light, making the room appear even brighter and more spacious. Small portable lights, a cosy armchair and pictures on the wall also help to transform the entrance hall into a kind of living room.

The new corner with the mirror from Essem Design is clearly visible from both sides, creates excitement and conveys a sense of cosiness.
You’ve reorganised your hallway. What was important to you during the redesign?
The visual axis was very important to me. I wanted to create a visually exciting spot on both sides of the hallway. The hallway is quite wide and leads directly into the living room. But there is also a second area that leads into the hallway. The new corner with the mirror from Essem Design is clearly visible from both sides, creates excitement and conveys a sense of cosiness. I've also created additional storage space for my magazines and room for my favourite room fragrance, which now exudes a captivating scent throughout the hallway.
You have decided to go for the Klara mirror from Essem Design. What makes the product special for you?
I really liked the simple yet modern design. The black frame gives the mirror depth, and the contrast makes it a real eye-catcher. Another plus point for me is that you can use it both horizontally and vertically, which makes it a versatile piece of furniture that can be used in any room.
